Daily Photos- Suzhou

Photo 1

At the beginning of the trip, all the students with different backgrounds have a chance to meet each other, and took the same course. It is really memorable.

Photo 2
I think this photo was taken from the Couple's Garden. There is a stage for Chinese Drama. It was really luxurious for the family to having one in their home.

Photo 3
We were waiting to enter the Master-of-Net Garden. It is really a beautiful and magnificent Chinese Garden. I am very curious about how the people of that day can build such a majestic garden.

Photo 4
Everyone were paying full attention to Stan's explanation about the interior design of the building. ( What were we looking at ?!?!? i can't remember. XP)

Photo 5
Everyone were tired after walking for the whole day. It was pretty odd when such a huge bunch of people were sitting right in front of the entrance.

Photo 6
My friends and I were right under the magnificent Tiger Hill tower. It was a really impressive building!

Photo 7

All the students were following Stan, and listening to the explanation about the Chinese garden. After visiting all those gardens, we learned more about the Chinese Culture. Different position of lake or buildings imply different meaning. Each step of construction has its reason.

Extra funny photos : ]

I am an ancient monk !!!
Four funny ancient monks XP The surrounding people were looking at us with funny smiles.
I was imitating the sculpture right next to me. We look pretty the same.
A very artistic photo. This can be some kind of collage, right ??

9 Collages

Image 1

This is the first collage that I did in Suzhou. On that day, we were given a theme to take photos and which was "GROUND". Therefore, this collage is mainly based on this theme. There are two pathways in the collage. Each of them is leading to a different environment. One is a civilized area and the other is a natural environment. And this implies the opposition of the world development and the natural habitat. We need to choose either preserving the nature or improving the human lives with destroying the natural world.

Image 2

In this collage, I had tried to develop a different technique which was discussed in our presentation and it is “layering”. However, the presentation of this technique was not successful enough to show the layers between the pathway, the round entrance and the buildings behind. This collage was intentionally to create four layers. First, there is a pathway at the front and lead the viewer into a round entrance. Second, the round entrance and the dark ceiling present some kind of wall that separate the inside and outside. Then, in the third layer, there are two red buildings behind the entrance. Lastly, the rocks and the two storey building are situated in the forth layer.

Image 3

This collage is presenting the garden of “Tiger Hill”. My first impression of this garden is the view from the entrance with the tall tower which is far away. And this creates a beautiful and impressive picture in my mind. Therefore, I tried to create this sense of impression onto the collage. There is a close-range view at the bottom of the collage. And the view is moving further and further away from the bottom to the top. Furthermore, the close-up image at the bottom was presenting an interior of a building, and this was designed to make the feeling that the viewers are standing inside the building and having a long distance view from the interior.

Image 4

In this collage, I tried to visualize the characteristic structure of a Chinese Garden. Basically, a Chinese garden was designed to create different layers and lets the visitors explore and discover. For example, there are buildings behind hill of rocks or bamboos. In my collage, there are four layers with the near view at the bottom and a long distance view at the top. The white space presents the lake. Apart from that, I also tried to make use of the shadow between the buildings and the lake. This created the continuity between different photos and also the sense of the lake.

Image 5

Before making this collage, we were given a theme again when we were taking the photographs. Therefore, the main idea of this collage is the “river”. In this collage, I tried to use the technique of one point perspective, everything are coming out from the centre of the picture. Also, there is a symmetrical balance between both sides of the river. The trees on the left hand side respond to the building on the right hand side. One is a native creature and the other is the artificial creature. The structure of the collage creates a balance distribution of buildings and trees. The two different types of creatures arouse echo with the contrasting nature to the viewer’s perception.

Image 6

In the Chinese garden, we can always see many long and tortuous corridors with heavy columns and ceiling. Therefore, I attempted to re-visualize this sense of structure in the Chinese Garden. There is a long and simple way which leads us to a pavilion at the top of a rock hill. Furthermore, the white space at the bottom and the top are responding to each other, as the space imitates the sky and the water. I tried to use a soft way to express the impression of the garden rather than the way of the previous collages which are very heavy with images.

Image 7
For the Chinese culture, endless of water implies an inexhaustible wealth and health; so many gardens had a water-flow which seems like with no ends. This collage tried to bring this message to the viewers. The river in the collage ends at very far away without seeing the extremity. Also, in the Chinese culture the river should not be too straight. Therefore, a tortuous shape of river was made. Further, the view of the collage is moving further and further away from the bottom to the top. This can create the extensity of the space along the river.

Image 8
This is a collage which I did in my home country after coming back from Shanghai. The first thing, which came to my mind about Chinese garden, is the corridor. In this collage, I am trying to reappear the meaning of the corridors in the Chinese gardens. The corridors are the connections between different places. They bring the complexity to let the visitors explore. Sometimes, each corridor leads us to a different place. However, we can still reach our destination with taking different corridors. There are connections between the circuitous routes in a Chinese garden. Therefore, this collage has three corridors which are leading to the same place and direction, which implies my understanding and perspective of the corridors.

Image 9
This collage was also done after leaving Shanghai. Amount the 12 collages which I did, I attempted to use the technique of materiality in only two of them. However the first one failed in both the presentation and bringing the message to the viewer, so I tried this again by imitating the Chinese art. This collage is using the shape to convey spirit and beauty of the flowers and the colors express the resplendency. This idea of expression is come from the basic thinking of a Chinese art, which express the feeling through art. I want to re-visualize the resplendency of the flower and bring it to the viewer.
